Experience Overview

Neil Griffiths has worked for over forty years advising the Consumer Product Industry on brand protection. This he achieved by supplying the necessary support to enable the industry to meet the constantly changing legislative requirements to provide safe, compositionally correct, environmentally friendly, properly labelled products.

This was initially undertaken through his roles within the U.K. enforcement authorities starting work at a private Public Analyst Laboratory (Bostock, Hill and Rigby/Clayton Environmental Ltd) in 1973 and then moved to West Midlands Public Analyst Labs in 1980. He gained a wide range of scientific, technical and legal knowledge required to enforce consumer product and environmental law.

He moved to the Meat and Livestock Commission in 1984 as Chief Technical Officer where he established a technical, legal and laboratory support service for the meat and meat product industry. During this time, he served on numerous MAFF and Royal Society of Chemistry Committees and acted as technical and legal adviser to numerous trade associations.

In 1988 Neil left to establish Law Laboratories Ltd, of which he was the principal founder, where he oversaw the work of a multidisciplinary service provision through technologists, chemists, microbiologists, ex-trading standard and environmental health officers and lawyers. Lawlabs’ European and worldwide client base provided him with a broad knowledge of the scientific and technical issues facing many different sectors the consumer product and environmental industry. As Chief Executive and Chairman he oversaw the rapid growth of the company, which provided a one shop approach covering technical, legal and analytical services to the consumer product industry. Neil was ultimately responsible for over 300 professionals.

In 2005 Lawlabs was sold to Bodycote plc and Neil became a Senior Director continuing to support and advise key Bodycote clients at Board and Senior Management level. In May 2006 he became a consultant to Bodycote through Neil Griffiths Consultants and in May 2008 continued to provide consultancy services to major retailers, trade associations, societies and government agencies.

In May 2010 he established SVA Ltd and as the CEO he oversaw the rapid growth in the provision of analytical and advisory services to major retailers to ensure protection of their retail brands.

In 2015 he sold SVA Ltd to SGS SA but remained employed by SGS as UK Director of Retail Services until 2017. He then offered consultancy services through his company Neil Griffiths Advisory Ltd up until 2023, where he stopped offering consultancy to concentrate on writing through his new company Neil Griffiths Publications Ltd.

Neil is also recognised as one of the leading UK experts on the policies systems and procedures necessary to ensure major retailers can feel confident in the safety, quality and legal compliance of their brands. He has played a major role in the development of the standards, auditing and certification schemes necessary to demonstrate due diligence by the industry on a global basis and lectures and presents widely. He also has extensive experience of providing expert witness in criminal challenges.
